Seven Quran Verses that Protect Women in Marriage

Image
" Muslim women are oppressed by their husbands”. I’m sure you’ve heard that before. In fact, so many have taken it upon themselves to campaign for the reforming of Islam to ensure such oppression no longer continues. And in all honesty, such statements couldn’t be further from the truth. While yes, some Muslim women, like all other women, may face injustice in their homes. It has little to do with men  following  Islam and more to do with them  neglecting  Islam. And if we truly want to rid injustice in marriage, we need not  reform  Islam, but rather, we must  return  to Islam. Here are seven clear Quran verses that prove my point. Husbands must give women their dowry. Unlike the traditional understanding of a marriage dowry, whereby a woman must give her husband a bridal gift of value upon marriage. Islam reverses the concept whereby it is the husband who must pay his wife whatever sum of money she requests. Not only is a man obliged by law to give his bride-to-be this

5 Tips for Taraweeh For Those Who Don’t Know Arabic

Image
Among the best trademarks of Ramadan activity is  Taraweeh — the long night prayers prayed right after Isha every night in Ramadan. Among the beautiful traditions that are prevalent in many Muslim countries is the culture of completing the recitation of the Quran in Taraweeh. Ramadan is, of course, the month of the Quran, and what better way to honour it than to have a complete recital of Allah’s Last Testament through the nights of this auspicious month. Taraweeh itself is also a very great act of worship. A narration in Bukhari states that the one who stands up on the nights of Ramadan seeking Allah’s pleasure will have all of his sins forgiven! However, there is a bit of a problem. If one does not know Arabic, Taraweeh might at times feel a bit of a static stand-up exercise with some bowing and prostration to smooth it out! Let there be no doubt that the best way to really dip into the ocean of the Quran is to learn the Arabic language. No translation will ever suffice f

The Warning Signs of an Abusive Friendship

Image
Islam encourages us to make friends with other believers, to love, and to forgive. It’s extremely rewarding to be able to forgive our brothers and sisters and to be humble so that Allah (swt) in turn deals with us leniently. But there comes a time when it’s a choice between forgiveness and self-defense, when we need to differentiate between humility and humiliation. This happens when one person in the relationship begins to dominate it and the other person feels suffocated and humiliated, or when one person starts to gain illegal satisfaction from the relationship at the expense of the other. There are many types and forms of abuse: Physical abuse:  More common in marital and parent-child relations, physical violence can even be found in friendships between unrelated Muslims. Even if it’s an occasional slap in the face or a sharp, angry push, count it as abuse. Mental abuse:  This is more common in friendships than physical abuse and can take many forms, such as belittling

Do More than Just Exist....

We wake up each day and begin anew, with better ideas to make money, get married or simply have more fun: Family, food, work, entertainment, sleep. Then, we wake up again the next day to dive into the same routine, the same ambition. We are in the same boat as it seems like we have exactly the same goals and aspirations: how to make ourselves more happy and comfortable. That’s okay, right? That’s exactly why we are here: to work tirelessly and make money, or follow some career, or get married. Each day we hit the internet to have fun and feel we are living the purpose of our existence. And most of us don’t even bother to think  about having a purpose ! I mean, we are educated, civilized people. And extremely busy. So that, by default, means we are fulfilling the purpose (if there is any). But we forget that it is not enough to be busy because so are the ants. The question is:  What are we busy doing?  Sometimes, does it not feel like we are  existing  but not  living ? I

Etiquette of Supplications (How yo make Dua)

Image
If you get the chance to meet a King, a country’s president or a head of state, and had the opportunity to ask him whatever you may desire, how will you be prepared to meet him? Take a moment to answer this question. You will probably begin with taking a shower, dressing up with the best of your clothes, probably even buy a new attire just for the occasion, you will make sure that you choose the best of your words, to say the least! At the back of your mind, your excitement is almost out of control, because you know you’re meeting the man who will grant you what you desire from this world. Why else did he agree to meet you at the first place? Alright, let’s get back to reality. What if you are to meet the King of all Kings, surely whatever you wish for will come true, but the question is, have you sought the proper etiquette of asking Allah   for what you need? Have you ever wondered why your  supplications are not answered ? Perhaps, you think that you are too sinful or f
